First, a few caveats about this post.
- I'm a passive New York Yankees fan.
- I'd rather play ball than watch it.
- I rarely read the sports pages.
That revealed, I don't get why the Yankees are so reviled. Is it the money-can-buy-the-pennant approach? Steinbrenner? Certain unnamed players?
Once a year or so I'll catch a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway, usually not a Yankees game. And I'm stunned by the vitriol toward the Yankees even when they're not in town. You know, the "Yankees Suck" tee-shirts for sale outside the stadium and similar expletives inside. I just want to scream, "Get a life."
I guess this activity in Boston might qualify as a passionate network of disbelievers.

Tim,
Interestingly, the New England Patriots are now reviled among footballs almost as much as the Yankees are reviled in some quarters. I think the origin of the Yankee hatred started with Steinbrenner, not an easy person to like or admire.

It's a tribe of exclusion... yes, a kind of passionate network. Though perhaps a disfunctional one.

The fact of the matter is that the Yankees don't suck right now which sucks in and of itself. The best sucking is when they actually suck (see 2004 ALCS). This type of sucking far exceeds other types in the enjoyment of sport category and ignited a baby-boom in Red Sox Nation.

If you think the Yankees suck sound is loud in Boston - visit Philly.

27 championships doesn't suck. The best team won.
